Google does not expect good sales of Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G and even cut orders for their production

Google is planning to ship a fairly limited number of Pixel smartphones during the remainder of the year, according to a report from Japan’s Nikkei this morning. This is due to both the decline in sales of the company’s smartphones in the past year and the problems associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is reported that Google intends to ship no more than one million Pixel 5 by the end of the year, and the total shipments of the Pixel 5, Pixel 4a 5G, and Pixel 4a will not exceed three million units. This means that this year Google is much less confident about sales of the flagship model than a year ago. The source added that the production of the Pixel 5 could even be cut to 800,000 units. This is because Google’s smartphone sales fell below target last year, and sales were further hit this year by the coronavirus pandemic. However, it is assumed that Google has the ability to adjust production orders for new smartphones depending on how the public will accept devices that launched a few hours earlier.

Nikkei noted that data from research firm IDC looks depressing. In the first half of 2020, Google sold 1.5 million smartphones. At the same time, for the same period in 2019, the company sold 4.1 million Pixels. We can only hope that the launch of the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G can reverse a daunting trend.
