Google employees create a global union to fight for the rights of workers around the world

Google workers worldwide are organizing the Alpha Global trade union coalition that will oversee the relationship between employees and Alphabet (the parent company that owns Google). So far, it includes 10 countries and 13 trade unions. The portal The Verge reports about this.

The news comes a few weeks after Alphabet employees in the US and Canada launched the local Alphabet Workers Union. In the beginning, it had 230 employees, and within a week, their number increased to 700. After that, Google Software Engineer and Chairman of the Alphabet Workers Union Parul Cool said: “The fight for justice in such a huge company cannot be limited to a couple of countries. So it is essential to team up with our colleagues from abroad – this will help strengthen the team spirit and resist unfair treatment by the employer

Therefore, these trade union members decided to organize another trade union, but already worldwide – Alpha Global. By the way, it became part of the UNI Global Union, an international trade union federation, which represents the interests of 20 million employees of various companies from around the world. For now, Alpha Global will include unions from the US, UK, Germany, Switzerland, and Sweden, and five other countries.

However, at the moment, Alpha Global does not yet have the legal ability to interact with Alphabet to put pressure on the company in the event of any violations, but this is a matter of time. Shortly, all paper issues must be resolved. Then, in case of revealing any violations or injustices against employees, Alpha Global will be able to defend the collective’s rights before Alphabet in court.
