Google ended support for Daydream VR platform

With the release of Android 11, support for the Daydream VR virtual reality platform has finally ended. Google announced that the platform’s VR applications are not supported on Android 11. Despite the end of sales of Daydream View VR headsets and the cessation of development of the platform with applications, Google promises to keep access to content for existing users.

“ Daydream VR software is no longer supported. You will still be able to access the service, but it will no longer receive updates, ”said Google, which also noted that VR platform applications may not work correctly on Android 11 devices.

It’s worth noting that Daydream was one of two major virtual reality platforms for smartphones, alongside the Samsung Gear VR that still exists today. At the start of Daydream, Google focused on the fact that virtual reality is becoming part of the Android operating system. However, the developers failed to form a wide user base, so a few years after the launch, the VR platform turned into one of Google’s subtle projects.

According to available data, at present, Google developers are paying more attention to the implementation of a number of projects using augmented reality technologies that allow virtual objects to be added to real space using a smartphone camera. Clearly, the end of support for the Daydream platform will help Facebook solidify its already strong position in the consumer VR segment.
