The Nearby Share feature has been built directly into Android for many years, but until recently it could only be used between phones. Essentially, Nearby Share allows users to transfer files between devices over a local wireless connection, eliminating the need for an Internet connection and enabling faster speeds than standard Bluetooth transfers can.

Nearby Share between Android and Windows has been in beta since March 2023 in a number of countries, including the US, and is now fully launched. According to Google, the beta version of the app has already been downloaded more than 1.7 million times. The Nearby Share app for Windows has also received a number of updates, such as previews for shared images and a display of the approximate time it takes to transfer a file.
