Google to close popular Rivet app to help kids learn to read

In 2018, a development team from Area 120, Google’s arm that builds experimental apps and services, released a product called Rivet, designed to help kids learn to read. In 2019, beta versions of the application were released for Android and iOS platforms. Gradually, Rivet gained considerable popularity. Now it became known that in October this year Google intends to close the project and close the application.

It is not known why Google decided to stop the development of the application because during its short history it managed to become in demand. The Rivet app has been downloaded over 10 million times from the Play Store alone. At the same time, users leftover 40 thousand reviews, and the average rating is 4.5 points. According to reports, the mobile and web versions of Rivet will shut down on October 15, and all app-related data will be deleted on November 13.

It’s really unclear at this point what alternatives parents who are accustomed to using Rivet will have as a reading aid to their child. The source notes that Google promises to integrate the ability to interact with Rivet through the voice assistant Google Assistant, but it’s hard to say how this will look in practice. Perhaps the developers will create a new Rivet interface for the electronic assistant, or the interaction will be reduced to the management of voice commands.

As a reminder, Rivet is a colorful and educational app for children from six years old. It helps you learn to read in different languages, including English. In the application, you can indicate the level of knowledge of the language of the child, and all materials are divided into categories. The rivet can reproduce what is written through the speaker of a smartphone, making it easier for a child to remember the correct pronunciation of certain words, and when the microphone is on, the application will make corrections to the pronunciation online.
