Google’s decision to shut down Poly was predictable
Once again, Google has shown that you shouldn’t rely too much on its services. The search giant has announced that it is closing down Poly, a 3D object library and sharing platform that launched in 2017 and primarily targeted VR and AR creators. The service will stop working on June 30, 2021, but it will be impossible to upload new content to Poly starting April 30, 2021.
Google to shut down Poly 3D model sharing service
The Poly service was designed to help developers create low-poly virtual reality objects. At the same time, it served as a library of resources that could be used in games and virtual reality applications. It offered an easier way to create assets than tools like the Google Tilt Brush or Autodesk, Blender, and others.
Google’s decision to shut down Poly was predictable after the company stopped selling its Daydream VR headsets and closed Spotlight Stories VR studio along with the Daydream Play Movies and TV app. Also, the company scrapped its Jump VR platform last year.
