Google unveils second generation Nest Hub smart display with sleep tracking
Google has unveiled its second-generation Nest Hub smart display. Externally, the novelty is similar to the model of the first generation. It has a 7-inch screen with 1024 × 600 pixels with a wide bezel around it, and there is no camera either.
Google said it made the device sound richer with a larger 1.7-inch speaker while also adding 50% more bass over the original. The device received a third microphone for easier voice control and a machine learning chip that allows you to process much more information and get answers to questions asked faster.
The next-generation Nest Hub incorporates a Google Soli sensor, similar to the Google Pixel 4 series, for motion tracking. The smart display does not have the full list of gesture control functions like the Pixel 4, but the user can, for example, delay the start of the alarm with a wave of his hand.
Thanks to the Soli sensor, the new smart display will track sleep, analyzing it based on movement and breathing, and detecting disturbances (coughing, snoring, light fluctuations, and temperature changes) that affect sleep.
This data is loaded into the Google Fit platform database to view it on their smartphone. He will be provided with information about the duration of sleep, its quality, the temperature at night in the room, whether the user was snoring or coughing while sleeping, and how the lighting in the room affected his sleep.
However, there are some limitations. The Nest Hub only tracks your breathing rate and deviations during the night, but it won’t be able to track your sleep stages like most wrist-worn devices. Sleep Sensing can be turned off at any time. Until 2022, the preliminary version of Sleep Sensing will be available for free, after which access to it will be paid.
The next-generation Google Nest Hub will go on sale on March 30 for $ 99.99. This is $ 10 more expensive than the original. The device is available for pre-order now, but only in the USA, Canada, UK, Germany, France, and Australia.
