LG switches from iPhone LCDs to car displays

According to TheElec, the South Korean tech giant halted production of LCDs for the iPhone on its AP3 line in Gumi back in the third quarter of last year. By the fourth quarter of 2020, the company had stopped producing LCD panels for other smartphones. It is worth adding that the iPhone LCD production line was ineffective in terms of profitability for LG Display.

It should be added that all models of the new iPhone 12 line have completely switched to OLED panels. Sales of iPhones with OLED panels are expected to exceed sales of LCD models this year. For now, Apple will continue to use LCD panels in the 2020 iPhone SE, supplied by JDI and Sharp.

The company’s AP3 line will now focus on automotive display panels. We are talking about LTPS TFT panels – an improved version of standard TFT panels. These LTPS TFT panels are becoming more and more popular in new car models that have been released recently.

The company‘s CEO today confirmed rumors that major changes will take place in the mobile division.
