Lost and stolen Samsung smartphones can now be tracked even if they are not connected to the Internet

With the new update, Samsung has significantly improved the functionality of its proprietary Find My Mobile application for finding lost or stolen devices. The company has added an Offline Search feature to it, which allows you to track your device even when it’s not connected to the Internet.

The device tracking feature built into Android by default requires a lost or stolen smartphone to have an active internet connection. However, most thieves tend to immediately throw away the SIM card, making it impossible to track the smartphone.

The offline search feature introduced by Samsung works in a similar way to what Apple offers. A phone search is implemented by scanning nearby Bluetooth devices. At the moment, the new function, which, by the way, can also be used to find smartwatches and headphones, is available only for Galaxy devices in the USA and South Korea. Soon the opportunity will be available to residents of other countries.

“Offline Search” will be supported by all Galaxy devices running Android 8.0 and higher, as well as some of the company’s wearables, including the Galaxy Watch 3. However, at the moment the feature is only available on a few devices running Android 10.
