Microsoft joins the dispute between Apple and Epic Games

Game developer Epic Games angered Apple by attempting to process user payments within Fortnite Battle Royale bypassing the official checkout, with the result that the game has now been removed from Apple’s branded app store. Since other development tools of Epic Games are also at risk, Microsoft has filed a lawsuit to protect its interests, since it uses the Unreal Engine software platform.

In a letter to the court, Microsoft states that the complete removal of the Epic Games account from the Apple site will result in the suffering of all third-party developers using the Unreal Engine, regardless of their involvement in the conflict between Apple and Epic Games. According to Microsoft least one of her games uses the Unreal Engine – a racing simulator Forza Street, which is also offered to users of the Apple iOS operating system. If due to Apple’s actions, the Unreal Engine stops updating or becomes unavailable for use by third-party developers, then this will clearly affect the interests of Microsoft, which it is ready to defend in court. The company will be forced to either cut off from access to the game a part of the audience that uses Apple products or rely on alternative software platforms when developing future games.

Epic Games added that corporate customers using the Unreal Engine platform have already expressed concerns about the viability of their own projects. Among them is, for example, one of the companies working in the field of automotive design. The Unreal Engine platform is used not only in entertainment projects.

Epic Games is still trying to get the court to remove the blocking from its own Apple accounts. The latter company insists that the ban will be lifted if Epic Games releases a version of Fortnite on the app store that complies with Apple’s current billing policies. The commission for payments in apps can be as high as 30%, and this is beginning to annoy a growing number of developers.
