Microsoft Opens WebView2 to Developers as Part of Chromium Edge

After months of testing, Microsoft today announced that the WebView2 control is now available with Microsoft Edge to all application developers. WebView2 is used in the new Chromium-based Edge as a rendering engine for web elements within applications. In addition, it will be updated along with Edge, which will keep the engine always up to date.

This means that developers of Windows programs will now have access to the latest web technologies for both existing and new applications. In terms of plans to update WebView 2 alongside Edge, Microsoft said it will update the SDK every six weeks. Preview versions of WebView2 will also be available to developers.

It’s worth noting that the transition of Microsoft Edge to the Chromium engine and the use of WebView2 breathed new life into the browser. The app can now work with Google Chrome extensions that can be downloaded directly from the Google Web Store. It also has its own extension store. Thanks to these innovations, Microsoft Edge is gaining new fans. As a reminder, the browser ships by default with the Windows 10 operating system.
