Microsoft plans to build a data center in Greece, investing in the country’s cloud infrastructure, a boon to an economy weakened by a decade-long debt crisis, and the coronavirus pandemic.

Microsoft will build a large data center in Greece

Speaking Monday at a virtual event in Athens, Microsoft president Brad Smith said the new data center will benefit businesses, consumers, and banks.

The investment has not been disclosed, but government spokesman Stelios Petsas said it will go towards new infrastructure worth € 500 million and an annual cost of € 50 million over the coming years.

It will be Microsoft’s largest investment in Greece in its 28 years in the country, Smith said.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the data center will bring Greece long-term financial benefits of € 1.0 billion.

“Greece will become a global cloud computing hub,” Mitsotakis said, adding that a modern computing center would also improve the country’s attractiveness to investors.

The project will include a digital skills training program for approximately 100,000 people, he said.
