Microsoft will move the Edge browser to a four-week update cycle

Earlier this month, Google announced changes to the release schedule for its Chrome browser. Whereas the browser is now updated every six weeks, the update cycle will be reduced to four weeks in the future. Now, Microsoft has announced its intention to adjust the interval between the release of updates for its Edge browser.

This means that later this year, Microsoft, following Google, will begin releasing updates to its branded browser every four weeks. “ As part of the Chromium project, we are looking forward to the transition to the four-week release cycle of major updates, which Google previously announced. This will enable us to deliver innovation to our customers even faster, ”Microsoft said in a statement.

According to reports, the announced changes will take effect with Edge 94, which is scheduled to launch in September this year. As for Google, the transition to a new schedule for the release of updates for Chrome is scheduled for the third quarter of this year, along with the launch of Chrome 94. Unlike Microsoft, the developers at Google did not specify exactly when the launch of Chrome 94 will take place.

Like Google, Microsoft will offer enterprise customers the ability to receive functional updates on the same schedule. Users who are not interested in updating Edge as often will be able to receive new features every eight weeks, but security updates will be delivered more frequently.

The source notes that Edge isn’t the only Chromium-based browser that plans to move to a four-week update cycle. For example, the Brave browser developers have also confirmed their intention to comply with the new update schedule.
