Microsoft will soon get rid of the old Edge browser in Windows 10

Windows 10 20H2 forcibly adds the new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser shortcut to the desktop and Start menu. However, the legacy Edge is still on the system, but it looks like Microsoft plans to get rid of it soon.

The new language pack, which was recently released for Windows 10 21H2 preview builds, lacks support for the old Edge. This could mean that the old Edge Legacy will be removed from the operating system this fall when Microsoft makes the mentioned feature update publicly available.

Despite the fact that the old Edge is still included in preview builds of Windows 10, after installing one of the future updates, users simply won’t be able to run it. Instead, they will be prompted to use the company’s new browser. For users, this transition will not be inconvenient, since data from the old browser is automatically exported to the new Edge.

However, it will hardly be possible to completely get rid of all the components of the outdated browser in the near future. The fact is that the EdgeHTML engine and some other browser-related services are deeply integrated into the software platform, so it will not be so easy to completely abandon their use.

It should be said that currently Windows 10 still has Internet Explorer, another outdated Microsoft browser. But the developers’ plans include a complete rejection of its use. In fact, right now, when you try to open popular sites like YouTube with IE 11, it is automatically redirected and the link opens in the new Edge.
