Countries need to develop rules for “space traffic”
In Earth orbit, the number of objects larger than 1 cm has already exceeded one million, and in the coming years their number will grow rapidly. This was told to journalists by the press service of Roscosmos.
more than 1 million objects from 1 cm in orbit around the Earth
This situation creates a real threat to guaranteed access to space. The corporation explained:
Already today, there are more than 1 million space objects larger than 1 cm in near-Earth orbits, and by 2030 their number will increase by 1.5 times. This poses a real threat to guaranteed access to space, including the launch and normal operation of spacecraft in orbit.
As noted in Roskosmos, in order to cope with the situation, it is necessary to develop some kind of rules for “space traffic”. Such international rules could be created in five years.
Roscosmos clarified:
The situation in near-Earth space (NES) has been undergoing significant changes in recent years. This is due to a significant increase in the volume and variety of activities in the NES, as well as an explosive growth in the number of man-made space objects in the most intensively used areas of space.
