A few days ago, AMD’s graphics drivers for the Linux platform revealed a cryptic GPU codenamed Sienna Cichlid. Many immediately suggested that this is the same “big Navi”. Now a Reddit user with the pseudonym Locuza parsed the information from the drivers in detail, presenting it on slides stylized as AMD presentations.
New details revealed about Big Navi and RDNA 2 architecture
The Sienna Cichlid chip is built on the graphic architecture of RDNA 2. According to the source, the chip has a double processor GCP (Graphics Command Processor) with support for two graphics pipelines, each of which can receive one graphic sequence. In the current graphic architecture of Navi 10, there is only a single GCP pipeline. But two asynchronous computing engines, each with support for four instruction streams, remained unchanged.
The novelty also received an updated Display Core Next 3.0 module, which is obviously responsible for image output. The module responsible for video processing was also improved, Video Core Next – also up to version 3.0. In addition, there are two such modules in the new GPU, which should improve the processing of parallel video streams.
It is worth paying attention to improvements in the frequency and voltage control systems at the core. They got more modules, due to which they can more smoothly adjust the frequency and voltage. It may also hint at higher frequencies of the GPU and / or memory.
Finally, support for GDDR6 memory and the Infinity Fabric Link bus is reported, capable of providing high-speed connectivity between multiple GPUs. Such a bus, for example, is present in the recently released professional Radeon Pro VII accelerators. Unfortunately, the details of the computing units of the RDNA 2 chip Sienna Cichlid so far no details.
