Nikon will cut staff by 10%, Intel is partly to blame for this

Manufacturers of professional photographic equipment have suffered from the pandemic quite seriously, since travelers have remained the main consumers of advanced cameras in recent years, and after the closure of borders, they no longer need new devices. Nikon is preparing to cut staff by 10% and move production outside of Japan.

Bloomberg reported this with reference to Nikkei. Nikon posted an operating loss of $ 251 million in the second fiscal quarter, which beat analysts’ expectations. Demand for digital cameras has dropped dramatically, and Nikon will now have to cut its headcount by 2,000 people, which is roughly one-tenth of the company’s total workforce.

It is also becoming too expensive to produce cameras in Japan, and Nikon intends to relocate all this type of activity to Thailand. There will also be reductions among the personnel employed in sales. According to Japanese media reports, Intel is partly to blame for the drop in Nikon’s revenue. Since the latter could have received lithographic equipment from a Japanese supplier, it can be easily assumed that the Nikon business was hit by Intel’s intentions to more actively attract third-party contractors to produce its own products. If Intel products begin to be produced on the side in a larger proportion than before, then the company’s need for its own lithographic equipment will decrease.
