Nintendo expects to ship 30 million Switch consoles in a year
The Nintendo Switch game console has entered the fifth year of its life cycle but continues to gain popularity at a pace that will eclipse all previous records. By the end of 2020, it had sold 80 million units of the console, but this fiscal year the company intends to release another 30 million devices in the Switch family.
It has long been known that Nintendo plans to update the Switch this calendar year with a version of the console with an improved display, more memory, and a more advanced NVIDIA DLSS processor. According to the Nikkei Asian Review, the company has increased the Switch console’s production program for the current fiscal year, ending in March, to 30 million units. Nintendo is confident in maintaining high demand for the device connected with the pandemic, which forces people to stay at home and look for entertainment.
Component shortages could disrupt Nintendo’s plans, although it hasn’t suffered from this until now. A testament to the high popularity of the brand’s consoles is the rapid increase in the Switch Online service subscriber audience, which last September totaled 26 million people. If the company’s plans to increase production of the Switch are destined to materialize, this console will become the most popular in the entire history of Nintendo’s existence.
