When shoppers started receiving Pixel 5 smartphones in mid-October, some noticed the gap between the display and the body of the device. This raised questions, as the manufacturer stated that the smartphone is IP68 waterproof. Google examined user feedback and issued a statement saying that the gap is a “normal part of construction” that does not affect the level of waterproofing.
“ We had the opportunity to investigate customer devices against our QC data from the factory. We can confirm that the gap between the case and the display is a normal part of the construction of your Pixel 5. It does not affect the water and dust resistance or functionality of the phone. We will work with clients on an individual basis to help them solve any problems, ”a Google representative commented on this issue.
According to user reports, the size of the gap between the display and the body can be different, and on some Pixel 5, it is not at all. Despite the fact that the insides of the smartphone cannot be seen through the gap, the dust gets into it, which over time can become a serious problem. Most often, the gap is found next to the front camera or in the area of the SIM card tray.
Disassembly of the Pixel 5 smartphone showed that the display is attached to the body not only with glue but also with five special mounts. Despite Google’s claim that there are no functional issues with Pixel 5 devices, it’s still odd that the display-to-body gap issue only affects some devices.
