NVIDIA promised to present the updated GPU architecture no earlier than 2022
NVIDIA has unveiled a wide variety of new products during today’s opening of the GTC 2021 conference. Among other things, a rather remarkable slide showed the company’s plans for the release of CPU, GPU, and DPU in the future. For example, it becomes clear when a new generation of NVIDIA video cards can be expected. In short – not soon.
The slide posted clearly states that the company plans to unveil the architecture, codenamed Ampere Next, only 2022. Next, around 2024, the architecture will be released, which is now referred to as Ampere Next Next. It is difficult to say what exactly is meant by such somewhat unusual names. On the one hand, NVIDIA could designate the following architectures in this way, without revealing their real names. On the other hand, we can expect an update or redesign of the current Ampere architecture. The first option, however, sounds preferable.
Be that as it may, the shown slide, first of all, makes us understand that this year it is not worth waiting for the architecture change in NVIDIA video cards. Actually, nothing is surprising here because NVIDIA presented the current Ampere only in September last year. Due to the total shortage, it really could not satisfy the huge demand. Therefore, it would be strange to see a new generation in the current conditions. The maximum that you have to count on is new models, for example, the GeForce RTX 3050 and its similar solutions of the middle and entry-level.
