NVIDIA: shortage of GeForce RTX 30 series graphics cards will remain in 2021

NVIDIA CFO Colette Kress spoke about the supply and demand for GeForce RTX 30 series graphics cards. According to her, the level of demand has exceeded the company’s expectations, and NVIDIA will need several more months to cope with the shortage of GeForce RTX 30 series gaming graphics cards.

The rapid rise in popularity of video games, due to the coronavirus pandemic, has led to a significant increase in demand for the latest video cards from NVIDIA and AMD, which quickly exceeded supply. For 2.5 months since the launch of the GeForce RTX 30 series video cards,  the manufacturer has not managed to solve the problem with the supply of the latest accelerators, which is why it was sharply criticized by buyers. NVIDIA expressed its dissatisfaction with the current situation, noting that the supply shortage problem is common throughout the industry.

“ Although we predicted strong demand, it exceeded our most optimistic expectations. Given the industry-wide capacity constraints, it may take several more months before product availability matches demand, ”said Colette Kress.

The GPUs of the GeForce RTX 30-series graphics cards are built on the Ampere architecture and are manufactured using the 8nm process technology at the Samsung Foundry factories. The amount of production capacity that Samsung allocates for the manufacture of products using technical processes of less than 10 nm, not related to EUV lithography, is unknown. Difficulties with logistics and many other factors also affect the production time of video cards. NVIDIA emphasizes that due to the high demand for the company’s latest video cards, the shortage of GeForce RTX 30 series accelerators will remain in the fourth quarter of the current fiscal year, which will end in January 2021.
