The TV Philips OLED 805, 855 and 865 will arrive in Europe in July. The three series, officially presented last January (HERE our preview), share the same characteristics and differ in design-related elements.
The panels are all OLED Ultra HD with 10-bit with a refresh rate to 100/120 Hz. The available cuts are two for each series: 55 “ and 65″.
All televisions sport very thin bezels and use metal finishes. The OLED 805 series is equipped with a pedestal consisting of two feet positioned perpendicular to the screen.
OLED 855 is instead equipped with a “T” shaped support base with central coupling and a chrome finish; the front part of the support is slightly inclined forward with respect to the support surface.
Finally, OLED 865 takes up the same design as the 855 series and adds a Muirhead leather cover on the base.
The fourth-generation P5 AI Perfect Picture processor with artificial intelligence manages all the elaborations. This renewed version has a greater calculation capacity and uses the so-called “machine learning” to apply more effectively various algorithms aimed at improving video quality.
Everything starts from an archive created by Philips and composed of a large number of test images. Philips technicians have specially selected them to be able to act as a yardstick for the input signals.
The P5 processor analyzes the sources in real-time and, comparing them with the material in the archive, searches for the most correct models for each scene by operating on the basis of the analogies found.
The aspects taken into consideration for the optimization of the signals are 5: the source, the colour, the contrast, the movement and the sharpness.
The improvement of moving images is entrusted to Perfect Natural Motion while Perfect Natural Reality (PNR) converts SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) content to HDR. Philips encompasses all the improvements made under the heading Picture Performance Index and speaks of 5700 PPI. The increase in the level of detail is entrusted to Ultra Resolution while as regards the enlarged colour spaces, we speak of coverage equal to 99% of the DCI-P3.
HDR compatibility is complete: HDR10, HDR10 +, HLG and Dolby Vision formats are supported. Obviously Ambilight could not miss, the proprietary technology that creates light effects around the screen thanks to LEDs placed along the sides.
All new OLEDs have Ambilight on 3 sides (right, left and top). The audio section uses a 2.1 channel system with four passive radiators and new midrange and tweeter. The power supplied is 10 W x 2 plus 30 W for the integrated subwoofer.
Philips declares compatibility with Dolby Atmos(with a dedicated virtual surround effect), AC-4, Dolby Digital and DTS-HD. The three series also include DTS Play-Fi and can, therefore, constitute a multi-room system with all compatible devices.
The Smart TV is based on Android TV 9.0 Pie with integrated Google Assistant and Chromecast as well as with full access to the Play Store and all available applications. If you combine an Echo speaker, you can also interact via the Alexa voice assistant. The heart of the platform should be a MediaTek MT5599 SoC equipped with a 1.5 GHz ARM Cortex-A53 CPU and a Mali-G51 MP4 GPU. There are also 3 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory. The following types of files can be played via the media player:
- Video : AVI, MKV, H264 / MPEG-4 AVC, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG- 4, WMV9 / VC1, VP9, HEVC (H.265)
- Subtitles: SRT, SUB, TXT, SMI
- Audio: AAC, MP3, WAV, WMA (v2 up to v9.2), WMA-PRO (v9 and v10)
- Images: JPEG, BMP, GIF, PNG, 360 photos, HEIF
The 4 HDMI inputs are compatible with HDCP 2.3 and support Auto Low Latency Mode ( ALLM ), a function introduced with HDMI 2.1 to automatically set the mode with the least possible latency, the one characterized by the fastest response to commands. The new premium remote control with metal finish, rear cover in Muirhead leather and backlit keys completes the equipment.
