PlayStation 5 became the fastest selling console in US history

Analyst firm NPD Group announced that the PlayStation 5 is now the fastest-selling video game console in the United States of America history. This applies to the sales volume of the system for five months from the launch – both in quantity and in dollar terms.

However, due to the limited supply, the PlayStation 5 was only the second best-selling platform in March and fell behind the Nintendo Switch on both counts. The latter is now also the top-selling console in the US for a record 28 straight months (by the number of devices).

Console sales in dollars hit a March record of $ 680 million, surpassing the previous high of $ 552 million set in March 2008. Total consumer spending on gaming systems, content, and video game accessories also hit a March record high of $ 5.6 billion last month.

In terms of games, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War returned to the top of the monthly chart in March in terms of dollar sales. The shooter has also been a bestseller in both the first quarter of the year and the past 12 months.

Exclusive to Nintendo Switch, action RPG Monster Hunter Rise has climbed to the highest rankings of new releases. The game took second place and is now second only to Monster Hunter: World in sales within the series (in dollar terms). Also, the recently released Outriders was the third best-selling game on PlayStation and Xbox on the chart.

It also became known that in March, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales (released in November 2020) surpassed The Last of Us Part II and Ghost of Tsushima in total sales, which were released in June and July 2020, respectively.
