Too expensive
In the coming months, judging by all the leaks and rumors, Sony will introduce an updated PlayStation 5 console, which some call Slim. However, it may not receive such a name, and physically it is unlikely to be significantly smaller than the original version.
A Kepler insider says that this generation of Slim models is not worth the wait. The reason is that the so-called crystal shrinkage (Die Shrinks) is “dead”.
PlayStation 5 Slim will not be “slim” at all.
Moving the Xbox/PS5 SoC to either 5nm or 4nm will cost $100+ million and will not result in a cost reduction. It’s just not worth it.
That is, apparently, the hybrid processor in the updated PS5 will not be particularly economical than the current version. It can go from 7 nm to 6 nm, but these are related technical processes, and such a transition will not give a significant reduction in consumption. Accordingly, Sony cannot significantly reduce the size of the set-top box.
The Kepler insider has repeatedly shared detailed information about the characteristics of future AMD CPUs and GPUs, in particular, platforms for game consoles.
