PlayStation 5 will receive VRR support with future software updates. A competitor has had it since the last generation
Sony Interactive Entertainment has expanded its PlayStation 5 FAQs with two new items regarding the Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) feature. Owners of TVs with its support were upset that the function was not available from the start of the console.
TVs equipped with HDMI 2.1 support VRR technology. It was first implemented by NVIDIA in G-Sync gaming monitors. Then the technology was picked up by AMD, which introduced its own version – FreeSync. DisplayPort has supported adaptive sync since 2014, and in 2017, VRR support finally reached HDMI.
In short, VRR allows the screen to sync to the current frame rate that the GPU of the device (PC or console) outputs. This ensures tear-free and reduced stuttering in addition to lower input lag compared to classic V-Sync technology.
Earlier, John Linneman of Eurogamer (Digital Foundry) commented on VRR’s work on Xbox Series X in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla :
“If you play Assassin’s Creed on Series X, you’ll see a fantastic demonstration of why VRR is so important. Without it, there will be a lot of screen tearing and stuttering, but if your TV supports VRR + 120Hz, the game will look flawless. The function will become very important in this generation. “
Variable frame rates were introduced back to the Xbox One X in 2018. Of course, it is supported by the new Xbox Series X and S. However, on the PlayStation 5, the function still does not work, which could not but upset buyers. Fortunately, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that VRR support will be added in the future:
“ Does PS5 support variable refresh rate (VRR)?
The hardware of the PS5, when using HDMI 2.1, supports variable refresh rates. With a future console software update, PS5 users will be able to use this feature. “
The PlayStation 5 went on sale November 19.
