PS5 and Xbox Series Deficit Spurred Nintendo Switch Sales in Japan

The Japanese weekly magazine Famitsu has released fresh statistics on the game console market based on an analysis of sales in Japan from November 30 to December 6. It seems that Japanese gamers have decided not to wait for Sony and Microsoft to finally saturate the market with their fresh PlayStation 5 and Microsoft consoles. Instead, most buyers in the specified period decided to turn towards the Nintendo Switch.

Of course, the main reason for this result is precisely the fact that Sony and Microsoft were simply unable to cope with the demand for their new set-top boxes in the current environment. As a result, 167,088 Nintendo Switch consoles and 37,534 Switch Lite consoles were sold in the Japanese market during this period.

Microsoft is doing badly in the Japanese market. Traditionally, in the homeland of the samurai, Sony and Nintendo consoles have always sold better than the solutions of the American tech giant. But the current situation simply cannot be compared. For all the time in Japan, only 23,245 Xbox Series X consoles were sold and only 6188 Xbox Series S consoles. At the same time, in the period from November 30 to December 6, sales of the first amounted to 1388 units, and the second and even less – 234 units. Whether the problem is the very limited inventory of consoles or not, the numbers still look very pathetic. For comparison, during the same period from late November to early December, the disc version of the PlayStation 5 sold 7,514 units, and the digital version – 4,379 units.

Total sales of the PlayStation 5 in Japan were 213,328 units, and the Xbox Series was 29,433 units. The difference is more than 7 to 1. It is also noted that the total sales of consoles of the Switch family, which have been sold since 2017, have already exceeded 16.5 million units in Japan alone.
