India’s Chandrayaan 3 mission cost $75 million, while Christopher Nolan’s film cost $165 million
An interesting observation was shared by The Independent: it turned out that the successful Indian mission Chandrayaan-3, in which the lunar rover is already traveling on the surface of the Earth’s natural satellite, cost half the filming of Christopher Nolan’s hit Interstellar: $ 165 million was spent on filming the picture, and the Chandrayaan-3 space mission cost only $75 million.
Sending an Indian lunar rover cost half the cost of filming Interstellar
What’s more, Chandrayaan 3 is cheaper than other space movie hits like Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity ($100 million) and Ridley Scott’s The Martian ($108 million). For comparison, the cost of the Russian space drama “Challenge” is estimated at about $10.5 million.
As for the domestic mission “Luna-25”, according to the head of the strategic planning department of Roscosmos Yuri Makarov, said in October 2020, it was estimated at tens of billions of rubles. There are estimates according to which the Luna-25 mission cost about 12.5 billion rubles. At the current exchange rate, this is approximately $126 million.
