Sony could resurrect Xperia Compact line for small smartphone lovers

After the iPhone 12 mini, many people wanted similar small and attractive Android smartphones. Perhaps the wish will come true soon. At least a well-known informant OnLeaks has shared an image and first details about the Xperia Compact – Sony’s revived series of small smartphones that was phased out after the XZ2 Compact in 2018.

The angular device at 140×68.9×8.9mm will be slightly larger than the Apple competitor, but the 5.5-inch screen and modest body could make it an attractive choice against the giants that now dominate smartphones based on Android. It is unknown what processor the Xperia Compact will use, but Sony will house two cameras on the rear (one of them will be 13MP), and an 8MP front camera in the notch, and will also retain a 3.5mm headphone jack.

As with many Sony phones, a fingerprint scanner will be integrated into the power button. It is not known when the Japanese company is going to release this easy-to-use phone, but based on past experience, it can be assumed that it will be announced in February and will hit the shelves in the spring.

Whether such a device will have a sufficient sales market is another question. In addition to rumors of production cuts, analysts from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners recently reported that iPhone 12 mini sales accounted for only 6% of iPhone 12 sales between October and November. Since then, a lot could have changed, but it is entirely possible that Sony initially targets a niche audience – a relatively small number of people who want a compact and light modern device without significant compromises but do not want to buy an iPhone.
