This is a German gigafactory
Tesla’s German plant in Brunheide, near Berlin, has begun production of the Model Y crossover with BYD Blade lithium iron phosphate batteries. Previously, Tesla has produced electric vehicles with batteries from CATL and LG for China and Europe and Panasonic batteries for North America.
According to Teslamag.de, the entry-level model Y with rear-wheel drive will be equipped with BYD batteries, while the imported Chinese-made Model 3 will be equipped with an LFP battery from CATL. CATL and BYD are ranked first and second in the global battery manufacturers market, respectively.
Tesla began using the latest BYD Blade batteries in Model Y
In early 2022, reports surfaced indicating that Tesla had placed an official order with FinDreams Battery, BYD’s manufacturing arm, for Blade batteries to be used in 204,000 vehicles annually. Last June, BYD vice president Lian Yubo said in an interview with CGTN that BYD would supply Tesla batteries soon.
According to multiple sources familiar with the matter, BYD began supplying BYD Blade batteries to Tesla’s German plant last year. It became the first Gigafactory to use BYD batteries.
