The court ruled that Google was legitimately using Java in Android. The company will not have to pay Oracle compensation in $ 9 billion

The US Supreme Court ruled today that Alphabet and Google did not violate Oracle copyright when using its code on the Android mobile operating system. In this way, Google avoided the $ 9 billion payments that Oracle wanted to collect.

The decision marks the culmination of a lawsuit that has lasted more than ten years. Amid the news, Alphabet shares are up 2.7% as of this morning on the New York Stock Exchange. Oracle shares rose 1.7%. The court stated that Google is legitimately and in good faith using key aspects of the Java programming language in its Android operating system. According to his decision, Google used only those components that were necessary in order to provide users with the ability to work with third-party applications.

Oracle remained extremely unhappy with the court’s decision. She stated that without strong copyright protection, she would have less incentive to make the large investments needed to create innovative products. Oracle accused Google of monopolistic behavior, arguing that the company simply stole Java and went unpunished due to its huge market influence.
