“Classic” AdSense links with links will be history from next year

Ads of all shapes and sizes are now used on the Internet. Google launched so-called ads or link boxes in its Adsense ad network in 2007. Now the company has decided to move on and retire this ad format.

The internet will never be the same: 13 years later, Google is retiring link ads

Effective March 10, 2021, AdSense “publishers” will no longer be able to create blocks with links to insert into their pages.

From now on, display ad units will start serving on sites instead of responsive link ads. The link boxes will be converted to display ad units and renamed. Sites will stop showing ads with fixed-size links. All ad units will be minimized if possible, otherwise, a blank ad will be displayed.

Based on feedback from users, publishers, and advertisers, this decision will allow us to focus on modernizing and improving other ad formats, Google explains.
