The plastics world must not win: Sony spoke about the eco-friendly packaging of the PS5 and plans for the future

Sony Interactive Entertainment plans to eliminate plastic in small product packaging through the  One Blue Ocean Project by 2025. In this regard, she talked about how the PlayStation 5’s approach to packaging differs from previous PlayStations.

For PlayStation 4 peripherals such as the DualShock 4 wireless controller, Sony has used about 70% recycled PET in the Americas and European markets where recycled materials are readily available.

The packaging materials used for PlayStation 5 and its accessories are fully recyclable and, depending on the product; the packaging is 93-99% free of plastic (by weight). To do this, Sony Interactive Entertainment had to move away from styrofoam or plastic trays in favor of paper components. Even the plastic clamps were replaced with paper ones.

This year, Sony Interactive Entertainment will be testing the use of post-industrial recycled polypropylene in packaging for physical copies of games in Europe. This means that discs for the PlayStation 5 may appear in boxes made of eco-friendly materials in the future.
