The PlayStation 5 will consume more power than powerful gaming laptops. But it will work much quieter

Sales of the PlayStation 5 game console in some countries will begin on November 12, so many tech bloggers have already received the consoles for review. For example, the Digital Foundry resource decided to measure the power consumption of the console in-game mode and compare them with the indicators of other gaming systems.

Recall that the PlayStation 5 is equipped with a built-in 350W power supply. According to the source, the console consumes about 200 watts of electricity when running games such as Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Astro Bot. The resource indicates that the power consumption of the console matches, and in some cases even exceeds the power consumption of high-performance gaming laptops equipped with powerful GeForce RTX graphics cards.

For example, a 15.6-inch gaming laptop based on an Intel Core i7 processor and a GeForce RTX 2060 graphics accelerator consume about 170-180 watts. Equipped with a more powerful solution in the form of a GeForce RTX 2070 Super, the gaming laptop can consume a little over 200 watts. But models with accelerators GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q version consume less – up to 186 watts. Mobile systems using older video cards, like the same GeForce GTX 1060, require about 120-140 watts of power. But in terms of performance, they are significantly inferior to the PlayStation 5.

Yet the most powerful gaming laptops with the GeForce RTX 2080 Super, currently the fastest mobile GPU on the market, consume 10-20% more power than the PlayStation 5. Digital Foundry cites ASUS Strix Scar 17 as examples.  G732LXS and Alienware m17 R3.

Fortunately, the PlayStation 5 is much quieter than any gaming laptop equipped with any GeForce RTX series GPU. This is explained by the large size of the console and its cooling system. In turn, even the largest gaming laptops use very compact cooling systems with very high-speed fans.
