The shortage of Sony PlayStation 5 game consoles will only worsen in the near future

In the middle of this month, the Taiwanese media already mentioned that the shortage of NVIDIA GPUs of the Ampere family is caused not only by the limited yield of suitable chips on the Samsung pipeline but also by problems with the supply of film substrates for manufacturing printed circuit boards. Chip manufacturing for Sony PlayStation 5 suffers from this problem too.

The continuation of the story was published today in the daily digest of the Taiwanese website DigiTimes. The source claims that AMD was able to agree with TSMC to increase the production of “semi-custom” chips for Sony PlayStation 5 game consoles, but everything rests on the availability of the very film substrates, from which all contract manufacturers of semiconductor components suffer from a shortage. Accordingly, the situation with the supply of chips for game consoles is unlikely to improve in the foreseeable future.

Manufacturers of film substrates expect to increase production volumes in the next half of the year by at least 10%, but it is still difficult to understand how this will reduce the severity of the problem of shortage of final products, which include components for game consoles, video cards and central processors.
