Updated Nintendo Switch gets OLED screen and new 4K dock

The next version of Nintendo Switch, which has been rumoured for a long time, will feature an OLED screen and will require a new docking station. This was reported by data miner SciresM, who discovered a new console model, codenamed Aula.

According to the data miner, Nintendo has been working on a new model with an updated display for about two years. SciresM unearthed that Aula is based on the Mariko chip system – there are a lot of references to it in the code. Recall that Mariko is the codename for the updated NVIDIA Tegra X1 SoC, which is used in the Nintendo Switch Lite. This allows the console to last longer and generate less heat than the original model.

In addition, from the information he found, he concluded that the device will be able to display images in 4K resolution since Aula has support for the firmware of the Realtek chip, which is advertised as a “multimedia SoC for playback in 4K UHD”. This chip could be inside the new docking station.

“I imagine the games will be similar to the DSi-enhanced versions or the way some games [got an improvement] on the PlayStation 4 Pro over the PlayStation 4,” added SciresM.

According to past rumours, Nintendo will introduce a new model this year.
