Users complain again about problems with updates for Windows 10

This week, Microsoft released another cumulative update for Windows 10 as part of the Patch Tuesday program. Sometime after the distribution of this package began, it became known that its installation in some cases leads to all sorts of problems.

Although the August Cumulative Update fixes 120 bugs in 13 Microsoft products, including two zero-day vulnerabilities, installing it may cause problems if you are running Windows 10 versions 1903, 1909, and 2004.

Users have reported that in a number of cases, installing the August Cumulative Update for Windows 10 ends up with an uninformative error message. For example, when installing KB4565351 for Windows 10 (1909) or KB4566782 for Windows 10 (2004), in a number of cases, errors 0x800f0988, 0x800f081f and 0x800f08a were recorded.

“ There were problems installing updates, but we’ll try again later. If you still see this message and want to search the Internet or contact support, it might help (0x800f081f), ”reads one of these messages. It is speculated that the problem may be related to the missing files in the WinSXS folder, where copies of DLLs and other system files are usually stored.

In some cases, it has been reported that self-service downloading and installing updates through Windows Update can resolve the issue. However, the source says that not all users can solve the problem by installing the update in this way.

It should be noted that KB4565351 in some cases disrupts the operation of the audio subsystem, and also leads to the appearance of “blue screens of death” with the error “SYSTEM THREAD UNHANDLED EXCEPTION”. This is reported on Microsoft support sites and through feedback channels by users who have encountered problems after installing updates.
