Video: a group of speedrunners ran Half-Life 2 backwards in 13 minutes

In February 2020, a group of 12 speedrunners (mostly from Russia) set out to run Half-Life 2 from end to beginning as quickly as possible, and recently showed the results of their labors.

To overcome Half-Life 2 backward (the game, of course, does not provide such a way of passing), enthusiasts needed a Half-Life 2 Backward Mod by MishkaKolos and 345 days of free time.

As a result, the team got a speedrun divided into 982 segments (572 regular and 410 buffer) lasting 13 minutes and 19 seconds. For this or that passage, a certain member of the group was responsible (see who exactly, see here ).

Half-Life 2 was played backward on a low level of difficulty, but the effect of this is almost invisible: most of the time speedrunners literally fly over locations and enemies.

The segmented nature of the speedrun allowed the group to select the most successful (“clean”, without blots) attempts of the participants, and therefore the final time is much better than that achieved by one person – 13 minutes versus half an hour.

According to the speedrunners themselves in a separate video with a breakdown of the race, the smoothness of the process is achieved by honing the same sections of the game over and over again, although in rare moments the streamers were lucky.

Half-Life 2 was released in 2004 for PC and subsequently made it to PS3, Xbox 360, and Android. The third part was also in development , but the game was canceled due to the incompleteness of the second version of the Source engine.
