Optional drivers will stop installing automatically
Microsoft said that with the November update, Windows 10 will have significant changes in the process of receiving new drivers.
Windows 10 is changing the way we use drivers in November
In February, Microsoft made a change that allowed hardware manufacturers to provide drivers in two ways – manually and automatically. Driver updates in Windows Update are based on the manufacturer’s choice.
For example, if Intel detects drivers as “automatic,” Windows Update will automatically download them when the user checks for updates. If the driver is defined as being updated “manually”, then it will be found by Windows Update, but offered as optional, it will not be installed automatically, and will appear only on the page with optional updates.
However, for external devices, these optional drivers are currently installed automatically upon connection. For example, when a user connects a webcam or controller, the drivers will be automatically installed.
Starting November 5, Microsoft will no longer automatically install optional drivers. And users should be careful with the connected devices – if the keyboard, mouse, webcam stop working, it may be time to install the driver marked as optional by the manufacturer.
