Xbox Series X and S will be the first consoles to support HDR Dolby Vision

Dolby announced that the upcoming Xbox Series S and Series X game consoles will be able to offer gamers both Dolby Atmos 3D audio and Dolby Vision support. Moreover, if the sound is available at the time of launch, then the advanced HDR mode should appear, according to the official website, in 2021 (a more exact date has not been announced).

The site also says Dolby Vision will deliver the brightness, contrast, color, and depth that go beyond traditional HDR gaming, offering 40x brighter highlights, 10x deeper black levels, and support for color depths up to 12-bit. …

Dolby Vision HDR for gaming was technically supported on the Xbox One X as well, but until now it was only available to testers through the Xbox Insiders program. While Dolby Vision games have never been publicly offered on consoles before, some PC games can be played in 12-bit HDR – for example, EA’s Mass Effect Andromeda and Battlefield 1 support Dolby Vision.

Confirmation of Dolby Atmos and Vision support on Xbox Series S and X may disappoint PlayStation fans somewhat, as Dolby Atmos won’t be supported in the upcoming PS5, and Dolby Vision support is not expected. Instead, Sony’s next-generation console will take advantage of the company’s new proprietary Tempest 3D audio format, which the company developed in-house, thus freeing it from Dolby license fees.

In terms of HDR, the PS5 is expected to offer only standard HDR10 support as Sony has taken a tough stance on Samsung’s HDR10 + format – Sony President and COO Mike Fasulo told TechRadar that the company is prioritizing other technologies.
