You will have to pay for unlimited storage in Google Photos from June 1
Google will no longer provide unlimited high-quality image storage on its Google Photos service. This was announced back in November last year, and the changes should come into force on June 1, 2021.
After the new rules come into force, the amount of free storage for photos and videos will be limited to 15 GB. To expand storage, you will have to subscribe to Google One and choose one of the proposed options depending on your own needs. It should be noted that the total volume of photos and videos that were uploaded to Google Photos before June 1 will not be taken into account by the new restrictions. This means users still have time to upload all memorable photos and videos to Google storage for free.
Many people may think that 15 GB for storing photos and videos is too small. However, Google claims that 80% of users of the service will reach the limit only three years after the limit was introduced. In addition, the new rules will not affect owners of Google-branded smartphones, starting with Pixel 2 and later. First-generation Pixel smartphones will have to subscribe to expand storage.
It is worth noting that Google provides users with a convenient tool to estimate how long the storage space will last. It will be useful if the user is in doubt whether or not to subscribe to Google One.
