Shipments of 8K TVs may not exceed 1 million units by 2021
Forecasts that suppliers will increase global shipments of 8K TVs to more than a million units may not come true until 2021, as the prices of these models remain too high, and the coronavirus pandemic has undermined consumer demand worldwide.
8K TVs won’t be popular this year
There are already quite a few models of 8K TVs on the market, including 65-, 75-, 82- and 96-inch QLED TVs from Samsung, 65-, 75-, 77- and 88-inch OLED models from LG and similar models from Sharp and other Chinese manufacturers.
Sharp is currently trying to increase its market share in Taiwan. The brand has recently lowered prices for its 60-inch 8K TVs and also plans to release its 120-inch 8K TV in the second quarter of 2020.
Suppliers who hoped to increase shipments of 8K-enabled televisions to China, Europe and the United States, where demand for high-priced TVs are usually higher than other markets, are now facing sharply declining consumer demand.
The transfer of the Tokyo Olympics also had an extremely negative impact on sales of 8K TVs.
