Alder Lake-S tested in GeekBench 5 with a GeForce RTX 2080 graphics card: the results are encouraging

The 12th generation Intel Core processors’ announcement is expected no earlier than the fourth quarter of this year. However, chips’ development is already underway, so information about them from time to time flashes in leaks. The most common source of these leaks is the Geekbench benchmark database. More recently, another sample of Alder Lake-S with a configuration of eight cores and sixteen threads, which is quite unusual for this series of chips, was lit upon it.

Non-standard because the Alder Lake series will use a hybrid architecture. Large high-performance Golden Cove cores and small energy-efficient Gracemont cores will coexist in a single processor. At the same time, only the first will have support for multithreading (Hyper-Threading).

The sample chip in question in the new leak only has eight large cores. This configuration is expected to be exclusive to Alder Lake-S desktop chips and will not be found in Alder Lake-P mobile processors.

Geekbench recently received an update that brought support for future Rocket Lake and Alder Lake chips. The app now recognizes the new LGA1700 socket for 12th Gen Intel processors and DDR5 RAM. However, the program has not yet learned how to read the memory frequency correctly.

These data are of increased interest because tests of an early engineering sample of the eight-core Alder Lake-S were carried out in a system with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 graphics card in the OpenCL graphics test. This synthetic benchmark is not an ideal indicator of gaming performance. Still, it at least allows you to compare the system’s overall performance with other configurations already entered into the database and draw some preliminary conclusions based on this.

The eight-core Alder Lake-S system with GeForce RTX 2080 scored 108,068 points. This means that the sample processor at least does not underestimate the graphics subsystem’s performance but, on the contrary, increases it. Below you can see a typical result of a GeForce RTX 2080 in the OpenCL test on systems with current processors.

Thus, even a very early engineering sample of Alder Lake-S, which operates at deliberately reduced clock speeds, has a good performance by modern standards. Moreover, this result is clearly not final. Qualifying (QS) samples of 12th generation Core chips with an increased performance level will appear around the summer of this year.
