All-seeing eye: it turned out that Instagram for some reason activates the smartphone camera while watching the feed

The Internet publication The Verge, referring to information received from users of iOS 14, reports that the Instagram application uses access to the smartphone’s camera even when the user is simply viewing the application’s feed. The owners of smartphones with the new version of the OS noticed that the green indicator of the camera operation is displayed even when there is no photo or video recording.

Instagram representatives argue that the root of the problem is a software bug, and the app doesn’t actually have access to the smartphone’s camera or microphone when the user doesn’t initiate such activity. But still, this bug can become at least a wake-up call for a number of users who carefully monitor their privacy.

This is not the first such “glitch” found in iPhone applications since the release of the beta version of iOS 14. Recall that Apple’s new operating system notifies users when applications access the device’s camera, microphone, or clipboard. After the release of iOS 14, it was noticed that many popular applications, such as LinkedIn, Reddit, TikTok, and many others, sinned with unauthorized access to the clipboard.

Recall also that last year it turned out that the Facebook application was accessing the smartphone’s camera in the background without the user’s knowledge. Although this is not the first such situation with the participation of Facebook, the company, she said, is constantly working to improve the security and privacy of its services.
