AMD Announces Ryzen 4000G Desktop APUs (Renoir) Not Available to Buy

As expected, AMD today officially announced its Desktop APUs, codenamed Renoir. They form the Ryzen 4000G lineup, which includes two-, four-, six- and eight-core media with the Zen 2 microarchitecture, additionally equipped with a Vega graphics core.

The presented processors are based on the same semiconductor basis as the mobile Ryzen 4000. They feature a monolithic (non-chiplet) design with a 7nm crystal of 156 mm 2, which houses eight Zen 2 cores and eight Vega graphics devices with 5th generation GCN architecture … AMD says it has achieved a total of 2.5x the computing performance and 60% graphics speed advantage through the enhancements and core counts when compared to the previous generation of the Ryzen 4000G APUs, the Picasso.

The many desktop APUs introduced today are broken down into two subclasses. The first includes the usual Ryzen 4000G, which are intended for computer OEMs, and the second consists of representatives of the Ryzen PRO 4000G series – processors for the business segment with additional security and remote administration features.

Separately, it should be noted that neither one nor the other subset has processor models that would be intended for end-users. AMD will supply desktop Renoir exclusively to computer manufacturers and system integrators.

The lineup of “regular” Ryzen 4000G includes six representatives with a thermal package of 65 and 35 W, in addition, three processors under the Athlon brand are assigned to the same class. The number of cores in the family ranges from two to eight, integrated graphics – from Vega 3 to Vega 8.

Talking about the advantages of the new processors, AMD highlights their slight superiority over Intel’s Coffee Lake family in computing performance and a significant advantage in the speed of the integrated graphics core.

According to the manufacturer in a press release, the Ryzen 4000G desktop models can be found in ready-made systems from Lenovo and HP, starting in the third quarter of this year. The Ryzen PRO 4000G processors will be available to enterprise customers through system integrators starting today. And in the fall, as expected, they will begin to meet in OEM-made computers. Retail sales of the Ryzen 4000G and Ryzen PRO 4000G are not expected, and it is for this reason that AMD does not announce the prices of new products.
