AMD Recommends DDR4-4000 Memory for Ryzen 5000 Series Processors

AMD Recommends DDR4-4000 Memory for Ryzen 5000 Series Processors

Thanks to the Turkish resource Technopat, it became known that AMD recommends using DDR4 memory with a higher operating frequency with the new Ryzen 5000 processors based on the Zen 3 architecture than with the previous series of chips. A slide from the company’s presentation to the press was published on the Web. It specifies the specifics of the work of the clock generators of new processors.

Zen-3-Ryzen-5000-CPU

The slide reports on the three clock speeds (in addition to the main frequency of the computing cores) that are supported by the AMD Ryzen 5000 series desktop processors:

  • Infinity Fabric Clock (FCLK): Determines how fast the CPU cores can exchange data between the processor chiplets and SOC controllers (PCIe, SATA, USB);
  • Memory Controller Clock (UCLK): Responsible for how fast the memory controller can transfer commands from RAM;
  • Memory Clock (MCLK): Responsible for the frequency of the RAM.

The slide indicates that all three clock generators are set in a 1: 1: 1 ratio and are tuned based on the frequency of the RAM that the system is equipped with. For example, if the memory complies with the DDR4-3600 standard, then the FCLK, UCLK, and MCLK frequencies will be set at around 1800 MHz.

AMD points out that the interaction of the memory with the processor is the most important aspect for users looking to overclock and optimize the system. As a result, AMD recommends choosing DDR4 memory with an effective frequency of 4000 MHz as the most optimal option for Ryzen 5000 series Zen 3 desktop processors, as it once recommended DDR4-3800 for Ryzen 3000 series desktop processors based on Zen 2. Users who will be using DDR4-4000 kits can expect very high system performance as well as high overclocking potential when using Zen 3 chips.

As a reminder, the Ryzen generation Zen 3 processors (codenamed Vermeer) will be released on November 5. The starter chipset will include four models: the 16-core Ryzen 9 5950X, the 12-core Ryzen 9 5900X, the eight-core Ryzen 7 5800X, and the six-core Ryzen 5 5600X.
