Canon unveils new-generation EOS C70 mirrorless camera

Canon today announced the EOS C70, the first compact multi-function cinema camera of its kind. This solution, which opens the new Cinema EOS series, is a mirrorless housing designed for the Japanese company’s latest RF mount lens system.

The EOS C70 features a Super35 sensor using Canon’s next-generation Dual Gain Output (DGO) technology. The DGO sensor reads each pixel at two different sensitivity levels, one to prioritize saturation and highlight protection, and the other to suppress shadow noise.

Canon said that combining the two signals allows the camera to provide over 16 stops of the dynamic range up to DCI 4K @ 60fps or 2K @ 120fps (using Super16 crop). The camera is also capable of shooting 4K @ 120fps and 2K @ 180fps with no HDR. Recording options include both full-frame recording and cropped options. The camera saves video on two memory cards in Canon XF-AVC (4: 2: 2/10 bit) or MP4 (H.265) codecs.

Other features that videographers should love include dual pixel autofocus, motorized ND filter, C-Log2 / C-Log3, PQ, and HLG gamma for HDR, two mini XLR mic inputs, thirteen customizable buttons (some of the controls are hidden behind a flip-up screen), and customizable LUT color grading options. An updated, thinner ND filter system provides up to 10 stops of dimming, expanding control over exposure and depth of field.

For optimal image stabilization, the EOS C70 uses Combination IS technology, which combines the lens’s optical stabilization RF system with electronic stabilization to effectively compensate for shake when shooting handheld. Additional communication options between the lens and the camera provide access to advanced functionality, such as informing about the distance to the subject on the LCD screen.

Ventilation allows the camera to record for a long time. This cooling system is located outside the sealed enclosure to prevent dust or moisture from entering the electronics of the device.

The camera has a 3.5-inch 2.76 million-dot rear LCD but does not have an electronic viewfinder. Obviously, Canon believes that videographers will connect their preferred viewfinder to Cinema EOS or use the camera in conjunction with an external monitor. The power system allows you to quickly replace the battery.

Along with the camera, Canon also announced the Canon EF-EOS R 0.71x adapter, which allows you to connect EF mount lenses to the C70. Unlike Canon’s existing EF-EOS R adapters, the new EF-EOS R 0.71x features an optical converter that provides a full-frame view on EF lenses, even when combined with a Super-35 sensor, and increases light transmission by about one stop.

In addition, the company unveiled the CJ20ex5B IASE S wide-angle 2-in-1 UHDxs lens with a powerful 20x zoom and 5mm focal length – it will join Canon’s range of 4K broadcast lenses for cameras with 2/3 ”sensors.

The EOS C70 will hit the market in November for $ 5499 for the US market. The EF-EOS R 0.71x adapter will be available in December for $ 599.
