First Metroid Prime 2D Demo Released, With Fans Developing For 17 Years

Team SCU has been developing the unofficial 2D action-adventure Metroid Prime since 2004. And finally, the team released the first working demo of the fan project.

Metroid Prime is a GameCube 2002 first-person action-adventure shooter developed by Retro Studios. It was the first 3D game in the franchise, and it introduced many innovations. So, Team SCU in 2004 decided to take the elements of Metroid Prime, such as scanning objects and to view data about them and transfer them to the traditional two-dimensional format.

“We have a long history, which began back in April 2004,” said Team SCU. – [We] went through 5 main programmers, and we had hundreds of volunteers who made thousands of materials. But this is the past, and we are now in the present

According to Team SCU, Prime 2D is being developed on its own engine. Rather than faithfully copying the source material, the team is focused on taking core concepts, transferring them, and then implementing them in a logical 2D solution. It is unclear how Team SCU intends to avoid Nintendo’s possible lawsuits, especially when it closed another fan project ( AM2R ) in 2016.

Metroid Prime 4, the next official installment in the series, is currently developing for the Nintendo Switch.
