Google wants to further improve the security of Nest products: for this reason, the Mountain View company has announced that all users will be obliged to activate two-factor authentication to access their account. The secure authentication method is not new for Nest products: its debut dates back to over three years ago, but now it becomes mandatory.
We will require all users with Nest accounts who have never signed up for two-factor authentication or who have not migrated to a Google Account to go one step further by verifying their identity via email when logging in.
In the event that 2FA (2-Factor Authentication) is not activated via SMS on the Nest account, it is specified on the official support page that Google will enable it by e-mail by 19 May 2020.
If two-step verification via SMS (SMS) is not activated on your Nest Account by May 19, 2020, two-step verification via email will be automatically activated. For more information on 2-step verification, visit this page .
Google’s choice to force two-factor authentication stems from the intention to provide users with a higher level of security. Suffice it to recall the noise made in February 2019 by the case of the American family whose Nest system was hacked by a stranger. At the time, Google denied any accusations but took advantage of the opportunity to remember how important 2FA is for its own safety.
