Microsoft worries about shortage of family-friendly games in its Xbox library and plans to expand to Chromebooks

Xbox CEO Phil Spencer discussed with GameReactor the lack of games from Xbox Game Studios and plans to expand the Xbox Game Pass service beyond PC, Xbox, and Android.

Spencer acknowledged that at the end of the Xbox 360’s lifecycle and the early years of the Xbox One, the company hadn’t invested enough in the creative capabilities of its studios, which was damaged in the long run. However, Microsoft is working to fix this.

“The problem with making games is that it takes a long time, so if you don’t invest enough, the games won’t actually appear next year or even the next two years. They can appear only in three, four, or five years, ”he said.

Spencer felt a lack of investment back when he was the head of Microsoft Studios. Fortunately, his promotion to head of Xbox gaming and his appointment as executive vice president of Microsoft helped him optimize his business and get the right tools to create new content.

Later in the discussion, the Xbox chief added that he considered a “gap in the armor” the lack of E-rated (“For All”) content or high-profile games like Fortnite in the current Xbox game set. Bridging this gap is a top priority for Microsoft.

Spencer was also asked about the possible expansion of the Xbox Game Pass service to other platforms.

“I think it’s all about priorities and getting more players for us,” he said. “ So after the Xbox, we first switched to PC, so that way we could reach many players who don’t have an Xbox. Then we moved to mobile because there are a billion Android phones on the planet. This is significantly more than any console player base. We still have iOS in our plans, and we’ll move on to it at some point. And we’re still working on some technologies for PCs, streaming, and moving to iOS. And I think that as soon as we are done with this, we will consider other options

It should be understood that the other options in this context are smart TVs and Chromebooks, not Nintendo Switch or PlayStation.

“There are smart TVs, Chromebooks, FireTVs. We still have a lot to discuss. We will prioritize where we find the newest players to give content to, ”Spencer said. – I love Switch, I love PlayStation. To be honest, I think they have done an amazing job in the industry. I’m not sure if [these platforms will be the next target for us], but [in the future] I can be open to these discussions as well
