MSI confirms compatibility between Rocket Lake-S and existing LGA 1200 motherboards

MSI confirms compatibility between Rocket Lake-S and existing LGA 1200 motherboards

MSI has confirmed that Intel 400 Series motherboards will be compatible with upcoming Rocket Lake-S desktop processors, which should replace the current Comet Lake-S.

It turned out this way. MSI’s portfolio includes the Infinite B915 gaming desktop, built on Comet Lake-S (CML-S) processors. It is notable for the fact that in the documentation for it, MSI directly notes that it can also work with future Rocket Lake-S (RKL-S) with a TDP level of up to 65 W. But what is especially interesting is that this system, as indicated in the same documentation, is built on a motherboard with an Intel H410 chipset – the lowest set of logic from the 400 series.

Thus, the next generation of Intel desktop processors will be able to work even with simple motherboards with the youngest 400-series chipset, which means that it should not have performance problems with more advanced system logic chips of this series, including the older Intel Z490. In addition, it follows from the same that the representatives of the Rocket Lake-S family will be made in the LGA 1200 package.

It is worth noting, however, that some restrictions may still arise. Rocket Lake-S has already confirmed PCIe 4.0 support, but there have been reports recently that not all LGA 1200 motherboards are capable of PCIe 4.0 support. This, for example, concerns ASUS flagship models based on Intel Z490.

In the end, recall that Rocket Lake-S processors should debut early next year or even at the end of this year. According to rumors, they will be an adaptation of the new Willow Cove architecture under the 14nm process technology. They will also receive new integrated graphics based on the Intel X e architecture (12th generation).
